My cool new job as an Education Project Assistant started this week at Hatfield Marine Science Center where you can come and see all kinds of cool Marine exhibits.

I got to talk to a great group of people from Portland Surfrider Chapter last week and shared the great   Oregon Public Broadcasting Field Guide of our microplastics work in Oregons rivers.

I was stoked to be invited to help shape the updated Marine Debris Action Plan for Oregon last week.  Met a lot of great people and learned a ton!

I will be giving a talk in Bandon, Oregon this weekend for the Shoreline Education for Awareness group.  I’ll be sharing new information on Marine debris and Microplastics research as well as what communities can do to help clean up our oceans.

We went to visit some friends in St. Croix about 6 months after Hurricane Maria demolished the islands.  Luckily they were able to fix their house and help neighbors get roofs over head again.  While on island the Nature conservancy hosted a volunteer day for St. Croix Coralpalooza 2018 where I helped clean algae off coral tree plantings.

After the great time we hd collecting fish and crabs, Dr. Karol Ulate transported the samples back to her lab at National University of Costa Rica where her two students Paolo Morales-Vásquez and Katherine Coy-Peña processed the samples.  

March of 2018 I went to Costa Rica to work with CSU Channel Islands and National University of Costa Rica with Dr. Karol Ulate and a group of undergraduates to look for microplastics.  With the help of a group of undergraduates we were able to collect water, sand, crabs and near shore fish samples to quantify the amount of microplastics in the area near Tamarindo.
